General
What is NEBRASKA known for?
NEBRASKA has many strong programs, but we are best known for engineering, computer science, business, psychology, journalism, pre-med, pre-law, agricultural sciences, fine arts, architecture and education.
Why should I select NEBRASKA over another school?
Nebraska offers incredible access to world-class programs, facilities and opportunities, in the classroom and out. We believe you get more access to our "big-time" college resources because our student population is much less than that of other major universities.
Is Lincoln safe?
Yes, Lincoln has been called the best major U.S. City by a State University of New York study.
How diverse is UNL?
More than 11% of first-time NEBRASKA students enrolled in 2007-2008 were underrepresented students.
What percentage of students is from out of state?
26% of NEBRASKA students are from out-of-state. Last year, Nebraska enrolled students from all 50 states and over 100 countries.
Do you have work study?
Yes, a variety of jobs are open to students who received work study as part of their financial aid. Students apply directly to campus or community employers. Jobs are updated regularly: http://www.unl.edu/careers/seic/studentjobs.shtml
Are there part-time jobs/internships on campus and in Lincoln?
Yes, jobs are available on and off campus in a variety of interest areas. Lincoln is home to the state government and several different industries, providing numerous opportunities for student work.
What percentage of graduates are placed in jobs related to their major?
our annual survey of graduates from 2006-2007, 91.9% reported their job was related to their college major.
Academics
Can I double major?
Yes, for a vast majority of major combinations, you will be permitted to double major at NEBRASKA.
Do you have a study abroad program?
Yes! NEBRASKA has one of the strongest study abroad programs in the nation - students from other colleges and universities use Nebraska's program! Nebraska offers 150 programs in more than 100 countries.
How do I apply for scholarships?
For almost all scholarships, you apply automatically when you complete your admission application. A handful of scholarships require a separate application. Ask an admissions representative for additional scholarship applications.
Can I still be admitted if I am missing one of the admission requirements?
It is possible - the Admissions Office will complete an individual review of your application. To be guaranteed admission, you must meet core and performance requirements.
Will my business math (journalism) class count toward my fourth year of math (English)?
This is not clear-cut for all situations. In most cases, classes such as business math or journalism probably won't count toward the fourth year of math or English requirement. Calculus / Advanced math or British Literature would be more likely to count toward such a requirement.
What is the difference between Computer Engineering and Computer Science?
Think hardware and software. Computer Engineering is more involved with the design of hardware, and Computer Science deals more with the development of software applications. However, there is a lot of crossover of information.
Student Life
Why do freshman have to live on campus?
Nationwide, studies show that students who live on campus are more likely to graduate. By requiring freshman to live on campus or in approved housing, Nebraska is working to provide the most supportive environment possible for higher learning.
What comes in the Residence Halls?
All student rooms have central air conditioning, cable TV, and a high speed connection to the Internet. You don't pay extra for those services. Also included are all the things you would expect: bed, pillow, desk, chair, dresser, closet, window coverings, mirror, and desk lamp. You also have the option of renting a loft bed or linen. Washers and dryers are also available in all the halls.
