General

What is Nebraska known for?

Nebraska has many strong programs, but we are best known for engineering, computer science, business, psychology, journalism, pre-med, pre-law, agricultural sciences, fine arts, architecture and education.

Why should I select Nebraska over another school?

Nebraska offers incredible access to world-class programs, facilities and opportunities, in the classroom and out. We believe you get more access to our "big-time" college resources because our student population is much less than that of other major universities.

Is Lincoln safe?

Yes, In 2008 UNL was given an A grade for safety by Readers Digest magazine.  A 2004 State University of New York study rated Lincoln first in quality of like among the 100 largest U.S. cities.

How diverse is UNL?

9% of Nebraska students enrolled are registered as minority students. Nebraska was rated by Kaplan and Newsweek as a school that supports diversity.

What percentage of students are from out of state?

20% of Nebraska students are from out-of-state. Last year, Nebraska enrolled students from all 50 states and over 100 countries.

Are there part-time jobs on campus and internships in Lincoln?

Yes, jobs are available on campus in a variety of interest areas. Lincoln is home to the state government and several different industries, providing numerous opportunities for student internships.



Admissions

How do I apply for admissions?

Start by completing the online International Application and submitting the US$45 application fee.  Then submit the required documentation listed on the international application checklist .

How long will it take to receive my I-20?

An admission decision will be made 4-6 weeks after all required documentation is received. A University of Nebraska-Lincoln letter of admission and the I-20 or DS-2019 form will be mailed to your current address as indicated on the application for admission, unless otherwise requested by you.

What is an official transcript?

A document is official if it is signed and stamped by the issuing institution or appropriate government entity. The signature and stamp must be original. Photocopied or scanned documents are not acceptable.



Academics

Can I double major?

Yes, for a vast majority of majors you will be permitted to double major at Nebraska. You can declare a double major after you are enrolled and attending classes.

Do you have a study abroad program?

Yes! Nebraska has one of the strongest study abroad programs in the nation - students from other colleges and universities use Nebraska's program! Nebraska offers 150 programs in almost 100 countries. Over 500 students used the study abroad program in 2008-2009.

How do I apply for scholarships?

For international scholarships, you apply automatically when you complete your admission application.  You will be considered for academic scholarships the same time you are reviewed for admission.

Can I still be admitted if I am missing one of the admission requirements?

It is possible - the Admissions Office will complete an individual review of your application. To be guaranteed admission, you must meet high school/secondary school core course and performance requirements.

What is the difference between Computer Engineering and Computer Science?

Think hardware and software. Computer Engineering is more involved with the design of hardware, and Computer Science deals more with the development of software applications. However, there is a lot of crossover of information.



Student Life

Why do freshman have to live on campus?

Nationwide, studies show that students who live on campus are more likely to graduate. By requiring freshman to live on campus or in approved housing, Nebraska is working to provide the most supportive environment possible for higher learning.

What comes in the Residence Halls?

All student rooms have central air conditioning, cable TV, and a high speed or wireless connection to the Internet. You don't pay extra for those services. Also included are all the things you would expect: bed, pillow, desk, chair, dresser, closet, window coverings, mirror, and desk lamp. You also have the option of renting a loft, bed linen, or refrigerator. Washers and dryers are also available in all the halls.

Can I choose my roommate?

Yes, if you choose to live in a residence hall, you will be able to list preferred roommates on your housing contract.

What is there to do on the weekends?

Here is just a glimpse of the entertainment side of Lincoln:

  • Major Broadway productions like Riverdance at the Lied Center for Performing Arts
  • Hoppin' live music scene: Rolling Stone magazine listed Lincoln as one of the best places to hear live music

Can I bring a car to campus?

Yes, and Nebraska offers a variety of student parking permits.
