Mechanized Systems Management

The mechanized systems management major at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln is designed to develop managerial and mechanical skills which can be applied to food, fiber, feed and fuel production and processing in Nebraska and throughout the world. There is a growing need to manage mechanical systems in agriculture as they continue to increase in complexity. At NU, practical courses stress efficient use of our soil, water and energy resources without compromising the environment. This major is administered through the Department of Biological Systems Engineering.

PROGRAM
As a mechanized systems management major you will study a core curriculum consisting of 30 hours of college and major requirements, 21 hours of science and math, 26 hours of electives related to communication, humanities, economics, social sciences, and 12 credit hours of free electives for personal development. In addition, you will take 39 hours of courses specific to an option area of your choosing. The four option areas for specialization are Production, Technical, Processing Operations, and Business.

Your adviser in mechanized systems management will assist you in examining your interests and abilities, defining career goals, and creating a specialized plan of study. Your adviser will also recommend electives to round out your education and complete your degree program.

RESOURCES
Mechanized systems management course work emphasizes hands-on experience, providing access to modern, well-equipped laboratories and real-life situations. The faculty are among the best in the world.

ACTIVITIES
Nebraska students have access to hundreds of activities and groups related to specific academic, social, cultural or political interests. As a mechanized systems management major, you may be particularly interested in the Mechanized Systems Management Club or Alpha Mu, an honorary agricultural mechanization fraternity. Involvement in any of these organizations builds leadership, communication and organizational skills while you meet new friends with similar interests and learn more about the discipline.

SCHOLARSHIPS AND FINANCIAL AID
The College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources provides an extensive college-based scholarship program for its students. In addition to University-wide and other scholarships, more than a quarter of a million dollars is awarded annually by CASNR to students enrolled in the college. Scholarship amounts range from $100 to $3,000 per year. Some are renewable for up to four years, depending on the scholarship and the student’s academic performance. Approximately $9,000 in scholarships are awarded by the program on the basis of merit, need and speciality area.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
• 4 units of English
• 4 units of mathematics
• 3 units of social sciences
• 3 units of natural sciences
• 2 units of foreign language

In addition, you must either rank in the top half of your high school class, or have an ACT composite score of 20 or higher, or have an SAT total score (Critical Reading and Math only) of 950 or higher.
