Pre-Veterinary Medicine

PROGRAM DEFINITION:
  • Preveterinary programs consist of undergraduate college courses that veterinary colleges require their applicants to complete before admission to those veterinary colleges.
  • The specific courses in your program will depend upon which veterinary college or colleges to which you wish to make application.
  • Preveterinary programs are similar but not exactly the same. Visit websites for the veterinary colleges you are interested in attending for more details.
  • You must include all preveterinary courses in your preveterinary program for all veterinary colleges to which you wish to apply.
UNL POINTS OF DISTINCTION: WHY STUDY PREVETERINARY MEDICINE AT UNL?
  • Take courses not available at any other college or university in Nebraska.
  • Learn about animal health and diseases from scientists and veterinarians studying and diagnosing animal diseases.
  •  Learn about animals from animal scientists studying animal production and animal products.
  • Gain experience in veterinary and animal production research, veterinary diagnostic services, and animal care as a student employee.
  • Socialize and learn from other students interested in veterinary or biomedical as a career.

UNDERGRADUATE ADVISING:  You will be assigned a faculty member who can help you examine your interests and abilities, define your career goals, and plan your academic career so you will qualify to apply to the college(s) of veterinary medicine of your choice and/or earn a BS degree.

SCHOLARSHIP AND FINANCIAL AID:
  • Qualify for CASNR scholarships ranging from $100 to $3,000 per year, some renewable annually depending upon academic performance
     - CASNR provides more than $250,000 annually to CASNR students as 
       scholarships
  • Apply for university-wide or other scholarships for which you qualify.

REQUIREMENTS:  WHAT DO I HAVE TO TAKE IN HIGH SCHOOL TO ENTER UNL AS A VETERINARY TECHNOLOGY STUDENT?
4 units of English
4 units of mathematics
3 units of social sciences
3 units of natural sciences
2 units of foreign language.
 
In addition, you must: 
rank in the top half of your high school class OR
have an ACT composite score of 20 or higher OR
have an SAT total score of 950 or higher.



Additional Information

OUTCOMES: WHAT’S IN IT FOR YOU?
  • Qualify to apply to any accredited college of veterinary medicine in North America.
  • Completion does not guarantee you will be accepted into veterinary college.
  • Completion does not earn you a baccalaureate (BS) degree.
