Biological Sciences

PROGRAM DEFINITION
As a major in Biological Sciences, you will take a broad array of courses in humanities, social sciences, and the arts, in addition to those in biology, chemistry, physics, and math. One of the strengths of the program is that you can pursue your particular interests—which might be microbiology, ecology, genetics, or physiology—through course work and independent study directed by a faculty member. Requirements for the major include course work in genetics, cell and molecular biology, ecology and evolution, biological diversity, as well as supporting course work in organic chemistry, calculus, statistics, and physics. You will have the opportunity to gain field biology experience by attending the Cedar Point Biological Station, which offers many hands-on lab and field courses during the summer. For many biological sciences students, Cedar Point is the highlight of their undergraduate experience.

The School of Biological Sciences maintains an advising center with professional advisers and an experienced staff. We encourage all undergraduate students, including those who may have an interest in biology but are undecided about specific careers, to visit not only the advising center, but also individual faculty members. The advising center staff and faculty members are always happy to talk to both students and parents about opportunities available to undergraduates at Nebraska.

NEBRASKA POINTS OF DISTINCTION
• Nationally and internationally recognized faculty, with a broad spectrum of multidisciplinary expertise are eager to assist students with undergraduate research experiences.
• The opportunity exists to pursue a specialization in the following areas, after completion of introductory coursework: microbiology, virology, and parasitology; ecology and evolutionary biology; genetics, genomics, and bioinformatics; biomedical science, physiology, and pre-health areas.
• The Cedar Point Biological Field Station is located in western Nebraska. Upper-level courses and research opportunities in field-oriented biology are offered during three-week summer sessions.
• Student Advising Center professional staff are available to provide academic advising, and connect students with faculty mentors and other university services.
• Biology Club provides the opportunity to socialize and learn with other Biological Sciences majors and faculty members.

FACILITIES
Biological Sciences and the University of Nebraska–Lincoln are fortunate to have the Cedar Point Biological Station for teaching and research. Cedar Point offers eight courses per summer at a mini-campus in the beautiful bluffs near Lake McConaughy, Nebraska’s largest lake. Thirty to 50 students can spend the summer at Cedar Point and earn up to 20 hours of college credit in one of the richest ecological settings in the region. At Cedar Point, students and faculty mix informally in a highly instructional setting, which provides an intellectual experience simply not available through any other university in the nation.

PROGRAM EXPECTATIONS (What’s expected of you as an undergraduate student)
• Earn a letter grade of C or better in all biological sciences courses taken for credit toward the major.
• Complete the required core courses (marked with “*” in the course list below) by the end of the fifth semester.
• Complete at least 3 credits in the biological sciences at the senior level (numbered 400 or above).
• Visit with an adviser in the School of Biological Sciences, at least once, before entering the fifth semester.
• Investigate research and/or pre-professional interests through research experiences and/or internships.
